I have two homes.

Above one of my houses live two dinosaurs,
they’ve been adopted.
Next to my other house live three grandmas,
there’s a lot of phone calling going on there.
The Cranes live in between,
that’s a newly blended family.

The people in my city form wonderful families
with always one extra plate of food,
an extra shoulder for comfort,
and a pancake ritual!

AMAI SPECIAAL CHAPEAU opens the doors to a world full of extraordinary family forms. With (homemade) toys and a landscape that resembles a giant pop-up book, two adults build the world and the image of humanity in which they want their daughter to grow up.

Karlien Torfs and Nikolas Lestaeghe create a performance rooted in their own lives, a life in which, as close friends, they are raising a daughter together. This performance grows out of the many questions people have about their family structure and their desire to question what is considered “normal.” In a world where the traditional house-garden-child family is becoming the norm again, they search for ways to shape their own lives within a reality that does not fit that model. They are creating AMAI SPECIAAL CHAPEAU for their daughter, who will be three years old at the time of the premiere, and for all other three-year-olds.
